Our design was inspired by Storyville which was the red-light district of New Orleans, Louisiana from 1897 to 1917. Storyville was established by municipal ordinance under the New Orleans City Council, to regulate prostitution and drugs. Alderman Sidney Story, a City Councilman, wrote guidelines and legislation to control prostitution within the city. The ordinance designated a sixteen block area as the part of the city in which prostitution, although still nominally illegal, was tolerated or regulated. The area was originally referred to as "The District", but its nickname, "Storyville", soon caught on.
A nocturnal refuge where the dark quilted leather of these sneakers, the lush red and inky black tones, would have been right at home kicked up on a velvet ottoman or perhaps tapping the bottom rung of a barstool. But best they be kept in a light bright enough to accent the seductive designs, shapes that call up lace lingerie and plush textures. Such luxury requires protection of course, and this is provided in the form of a practical and streetwise gum outsole made to weather the abuse of the back alleys. Like a fine bourbon in some dusky brothel where women lounge and the law turns a blind eye, these shoes are something to savor.
